Fully restored Sony D-7 (aka D-50 MkII) Discman, revived Sony BP-200 rechargeable batte ry, Sony AC-930A adapter (all with protective/travel cases), and one 8xAA battery pack with fresh batteries included in the set. Let me say it again: Hi-Fi News published a review of a 33 year old Discman in September 2019!!! My least loved one is D-50 but my all-time favorite is D-50 MkII. The start/stop nature of the pounding beats that form the bedrock of tracks like’Vanishing Point’ highlighted one of the player’s key virtues: there was not a hint of smearing or delay. One consequence of this type of presentation is that the player is forever grabbing your attention with various details of the music’s unfolding rhythms? Though this means that the D-50 MkII’s sound isn’t one which is easy to relax to. To me this proved to be the player’s main limitation. It is a fine companion when you really want to become involved with what you are listening to, but it can be a bit overpowering when you just want something to make soothing music in the background. Original Sony AC-930A adapter supplied with D-7 had its smoothing 2,200uF capacitor upgraded to Nichicon audio-grade “Muse” electrolytic. Further upgrade path would be ge. Tting 9V Linear Power Supply (a bit like XPS power supplies for Naim Audio CD players), but all Discmans from my collection sound their best off the batteries. That is why 8xAA, center-negative battery pack is included for your critical listening sessions. You may notice that eight fresh AA provide over 12V, but this is an exact substitute for the unobtanium Sony EBP-380 Battery Case recommended by Sony for this Discman. Restoration of D-50 MkII is rather challenging, and justifiable only by the end result. Absolutely all original D-7/D-50 MkII are dead by now, it does not help that normally you need two dead D-7 to put together one complete Discman.
