Besides the Sony shield, they are identical for the most part. The main difference is these have higher quality speakers with the ability to hear more frequencies of sound. If you are looking at this listing you most likely already know all about these headphones. Up for sale is a beautiful pair of the historic 1984 Sony MDR-CD5 model headphones. Not only is this physical piece of technology history, but also represent what was to come in the future. These were manufactured for use with the first portable CD player Sony manufactured, model D-5 / D-50. The portable size of the CD player this was designed for kickstarted CDs as the next form of media. Sony was the first to create a portable size CD player which was revolutionary and literally changed in entire industry. These headphones are fully functional and in beautiful cosmetic shape. They have been tested and sound flawless, both left and right stereo channels work without a hitch. The cable was properly wrapped to prevent any of the interior electric wires from any damage. The way they are tied in the photo is not how they were stored. This model has become highly sought after and is insanely scarce. With the history of portable players and technology becoming readily available collectors of all ages are searching for these to add to their collection. In 1983, Sony and Phillips introduced the Compact Disc, and with it came a slew of digital recording equipment. Sony engineers realized the need for a higher-quality headphone suitable to reproduce the ful frequency range of the new format. Coinciding with the Compact Disc, Sony released the MDR-CD5 and MDR-CD7 models, both utilizing a 30mm dome driver, specifically designed for digital audio applications. The two models were similar, but the CD7 boasted a gold diaphragm and black color, while the CD5 was silver colored and had a standard PET diaphragm. They were extremely lightweight and provided some limited isolation from outside noise with an oval on-the-ear earpad design. The connecting cord terminated at the left ear only, and made them very popular in professional audio applications. Like mentioned above these have been thoroughly tested and are in fully functional condition. Each area of these headphones has been inspected and cleaned. Its amazing how good of condition these are in, a forgotten treasure. Below I will over describe each part of the headphones and their condition. The band is in near perfect shape all around! The metal does not have any bends and there are no visible scratches. Both the top and bottom side are nice and clean, hardly any signs of previous use. I cleaned & sterilized them and it shines beautifully. Both the cans and the cable are in very good plus condition. The cable is in near flawless condition! The rubber wire is fresh, clean and most importantly; the wire was properly stored / looped tied to prevent any damage to the interior electrical wires. The jack has the ability to screw on 6.3 type adapter, although they were not originally bundled with one. The urethrane material used on ear pads was not designed to stand the test of time. I wanted to keep them original so instead of cleaning it off I kept them as it is. What is really need is if you clean the urethane off it will expose the original Orange lije colored foam used in the early pairs of Walkman headphones. Dont miss out on this one, as you know they simply never come up for sale. You definitely will not be letdown with this item, you would be the second owner of this piece of history.
